I'm considering purchasing a wireless keytar with a view to controlling the sounds in the KN7000 via the wireless keytar. The keytar comes with a USB dongle and I wondered if it would be possible to achieve this via the USB port on the KN?

Re: USB compatibility with wireless keytarHi Mike, looks like a nice bit of gear,I take it is an "Alesis " which has the wireless dongle, The KN7000 was designed around 1990/2000 although production only realy started in 2002 at the trade show launch in the end of spring that year. This means the USB set up is not that we are used to today, It is only fitted with a Type B socket which is not suitable for the dongle, the only way I can see is to control the KN7000 via as short a midi lead from a laptop. This should reduce any time lag to a minimum, also if the laptop is only being used for the job of MIDI control and has a fast processor again this should reduce any lag, Where you have any extra unit in the signal line no matter how fast lag is always possible. Midi signals going from IN to THRU more than a few times can cause lag, however if you use a THRUBOX this will help to reduce lag.

Re: USB compatibility with wireless keytarThank you John. Yes it is the Alesis Keytar. I`ve just spoken to there technical department and the dongle is only compatible with the software that comes with the keytar so it`s definitely not going to work by just plugging it into a slave keyboard. They also said the same as you that it would be possible to control the KN through a laptop connected via a midi lead. I`ve seen some wireless Midi interfaces online but not sure of the reliability and lag as I am looking to use this for live gigs with a band I have just joined.
