I used to use an Atari ST computer running Gajits' Breakthru Sequencing software for my KN600 (yes, six-hundred!) with a Roland voice box added. Sadly, my Atari gave up the ghost a few years ago, so I thought I'd do my sequencing on my Windows PC. I bought Cakewalk's Music Creator V2 and installed it on the PC (which was running Windows XP) and added a USB-Midi connector but could never get the software to recognise my keyboard (by this time I had bought a second-hand KN800 which I still have). I guess it must be down to my ineptitude with the technical stuff (I find manuals difficult to follow - they seem to assume I know more than I do!) but, in the end I gave up.

More recently, I bought a Technics KN6500 which worked fine for a year and I didn't trouble to pursue my sequencing software further. Now, sadly, the sequencing part of the KN6500 no longer works (seem my post elsewhere, requesting help) and I'd like to go back to the PC idea in case my plea for help goes unanswered. First, I'd like to know if there is a Windows 10 sequencing package that will replace Breakthru (which I loved) or whether Music Creator just needs some tweaking to do the job.

Any help would be much appreciated - from wherever it comes.

Thanks,
Mike

hi Mike, I not you say your KN6500 is not saving also, and you say you have a hard drive fitted?. Firstly if you want I would do a reset using the Program Menu Button then going to Control, Then Press "Initial" This will bring up a list of sections you can reset if you use "Performance" this will reset back to your basic settings, unfortunately, if you have anything stored, it will also be reset. You should then be able to save to disc, If you have the optional Hard drive fitted this should also clear any bugs. I hope this is of help. If you have do not succeed we may have to go for a full factory reset, if that is required I will send you the procedure, but please try the Performance reset first.

Re: Midi Sequencer to link KN6500 to PC (Windows 10)

Hi John:

Thanks for the quick reply. I thought all KN6500s had a hard drive. the reason I believe I have one on board is that, when I make changes to various aspects (e.g. Sound Edit) there is a facility to "Write" and store a new sound (see manual page 144, section 5). As soon as I use that button, the keyboard crashes and reboots itself. This occurs whenever I try to save some kind of change I've made to the setup. I therefore assume there must be some kind of operating system and storage mechanism for this to happen.

Thanks for providing the reset process - I hope this will put everything back to normal (I don't mind losing old settings - I want my keyboard back to full operation). I'm going to try the "Performance" reset today and I'll report back. If the factory reset is required, so be it. But, if all that doesn't work, I fear I'm in for some expensive engineering work sad and, hopefully, there is someone out there who can undertake it.

I appreciate your help.

Cheers,
Mike

Re: Midi Sequencer to link KN6500 to PC (Windows 10)

Later...

I tried the "Performance" reset and it appeared to do what was indicated in your post. However, as soon as I tried to make some changes and write them (I guess to the hard drive), the keyboard crashed and re-booted. I fear the time may have come to perform the factory reset if you would be kind enough to tell me what I should do.

Incidentally, in my Performance reset, the warning about replacing current data with the original factory settings appeared as a box with a single "word" of four characters which was gibberish. This suggests to me that some part of the hard drive or operating system got corrupted.

I look forward to hearing from you.

Cheers,
Mike

Incidentally, I'm still looking for sequencer software to allow me to connect my KN6500 through my PC thus replacing my old Atari 400/Breakthru setup. can anyone help, please?

Cheers,
Mike

Re: Midi Sequencer to link KN6500 to PC (Windows 10)

Hi John:

Don't hold your breath, but I think this has worked!. I need to do some tests but, after doing the reset, I just did a save on the panel memory and that seems to have worked. I'll come back and confirm after doing the tests but I just wanted to thank you for your assistance thus far.

If my more stringent tests don't work out, the next step will probably be chatting to an engineer to see if I'm a hopeless case or in with a chance.

The next move in my plan is trying Cakewalk Music Creator on my PC using Midi. I suspect, having read and failed to understand the KN6500 manual on Midi, that I shall need to come back and ask more inane questions. But, for now, it all looks very promising.

Thank you for your help.

Cheers,
Mike
