Dear Technics experts, I have the rack-mount version of SX-WSA1. When I started it after long time of not using it, it plays, but the sound is very strange. Looks like some digital noise and distortion. I can add the wave sound later here. For me it looks like some bits are randomly on-off in D/A converter. Sometimes the sound is OK, but only for one moment, after it starts to sound like digitally distorted, like bitcrusher plug-in or so. I have found the service manual, but for WSA1 keyboard version. Two things to mention: the power transistors on main PCB (the voltage regulation +5V) are very very hot, not possible to let finger on them. is it normal? Second, unit was not operated long time and stayed "under dust" in maybe a little bit wet environment (cellar). Maybe some corrosion or oxidation of contacts? Somebody here having the similar trouble, please?

Re: SX-WSA1r digital noise and distortion

All equipment must be kept dry no matter what. However, I would suggest that as with all old Technics gear a general overhaul is called for. This gear is all over 25 years old and to be brutally honest much of it despite the great sounds, needs drastic work to make it keep working. Many of the power supply capacitors will be leaky, the regulators are always stressed and in need of replacing and ideally fitted with some proper heat sinking as this issue was a cost compromise at manufacture and it was never expected that this gear would still be in use all these years down the line. Fortunately if the equipment is in reasonably good condition there is a chance that it can be put back to its original state. However, it should be noted that there are many suspect components out there for those no longer available types fitted in all types of Technics keyboards. Things like SIL dual op-amps which are obsolete and DAC's to name but two. I would suggest you go through a power supply and its capacitors replacement and then see how it sounds.
