separate drawbar output

Can anyone help. I want to modify my KN6500 to have a separate audio output from my drawbars to connect to a Lesley. Has anyone out there attempted this. I'm am an Electronics Technician. Thanks Peter

Re: separate drawbar output

Hi Peter,

I can't imagine that would be achievable on a KN6500. The KNs sound pretty good through them when the spin is off but of course once the horn is spinning it will ruin drum sounds etc. The drawbars sound amazing through a Leslie.

The case for a KN7000 is different because it has an additional set of outputs (Sub Out). Parts can be individually selected to route to those outputs, this makes it possible to route the drawbars separately to a Leslie. You can do the same on a WSA1, routing separate Parts to different outputs and on some of the later PR Digital Ensembles. You probably wouldn't want to do drawbars on a PR though because of the heavier key action.

What it might be possible to do is to have an amp and a Leslie, switching between the two with some simple manual audio switches. Then you could route to the Leslie when taking the organ part. I know that's probably not what you want to do.

I'm going to have a think on this subject and I'll get back to you if I have any good ideas.

I'm about to answer another post that is slightly related so I'll add a link to that shortly.

Oh and I've just noticed that you might have a KN3000 too? If you have two keyboards then you could route one of them to the Leslie and the other to an amp maybe?

Best wishes,
Mike

I'm hoping that Dave might have some insight though if you are able to delve into the interior electronics of the thing...

Re: separate drawbar output

Hi Mike and Peter

There is as far as I know only one DAC output on the 6500 which means the entire structure of the instrument has been designed to output all content via that converter. It is very unlikely that you will be able to split the sound of the drawbars off without there being some sort of compromise. There is one main tone generator chip (ic213) that has over 200 legs and it is extremely unlikely that there is a specific set that just outputs the digital signal for this particular sound. It would be a great shame to ruin an instrument for the sake of this function when as Mike says there are other instruments that can do it within the firmware.

I would be tempted to create a midi link between two keyboards and use one as the master for playing just the drawbars whilst the other does the rest of the sounds and therefore you have two stereo outputs you can mix down stream. This might appear more complicated but given there are no spares for these keyboards you could end up with just a pile of non working bits.

Hope this helps

Regards

Dave
