Hi. This is my first post to the forum after joining with Mike's help. I am not a keyboard player, but, for want of a better word, a music coordinator for a church and we have a Technics SX-PR54 keyboard in one of our churches. This model has no lasting internal memory and the organist will record songs direct to a floppy disk, and then if we need to use the same songs on our newer Yamaha keyboard in another church, we copy from floppy disk to PC to USB drive. Nowadays that is a bit anachronistic as many PCs do not have floppy drives, and the clunky process is rife with opportunities to make a mistake. I am intrigued to see that the SX-PR54 has a USB port and would like to know what it's purpose might be? I was hopeful that it perhaps came with some software that would enable us to drive the recording functions externally and obviate the need for a floppy disk. However, there is no evidence that the keyboard came with any software disk or CD. Any suggestions would be much appreciated.

PS, I should have mentioned that the laptop we would be connecting (if there is any reason to do so) is running Windows 7 Home Premium operating system.

Hi Melc24t,

What Yamaha keyboard are you trying to transfer to?

Does your organist use many of the Rhythms and automated features? Or is she mainly using it as a piano with a few other sounds thrown in? If the Automated accompaniment isn't being used than it is relatively simple to transfer MIDI files and actually floppy disks are probably your most straightforward option.

As you have Windows 7, my advice would be to use the USB connection only for recording audio and do everything else by floppy.

The original CD has an Audio Recorder (we can probably set you up with an appropriate version) and it also has MIDI drivers (probably for Windows XP). Those drivers might work on windows 7 but it would be far more reliable for you to purchase a MIDI interface that is Windows 7 compatible if you want to record MIDI using your laptop. The USB route might look tempting but is going to cause you a few hours of potentially frustrating work to set it up, whereas a MIDI interface will just work with little effort.

Best wishes,
Mike
