Greetings to all from Western Australia.

Is anyone out there familiar with KN2000 floppy drive malfunctions?

MY KN2000
SYMPTOM: When a floppy disc is loaded into the drive a very audible “whirring” sound emanates from the unit.
The drive indicator light does not light up.The “whirring” stops , and the following error message is displayed on the screen.:
Error Message 01 “There is no disc in the drive”
I tried several times to load this and other discs but to no avail. At first I thought that the drive belt had snapped or worked loose from the spindle.
I have a replacement belt at the ready but I thought I would check with you guys first BEFORE I install it.I want to ensure that to ascertain that the belt is the fault.
I would be most grateful if you can point me in the right direction here by suggesting possible reason/s for drive malfunction, and how to repair it.
Can you help please?

Regards

Re: BIG HELLO FROM DOWNUNDER buckiec

Hi buciec,

Despite what some people say, floppy drives are very reliable in my experience. My KN901 is around the same age as your KN2000 and I've had to use a drive cleaner on it a few times over the years which always restores it. It does make a bit of a whirring sound.

I'm not much of an engineer but here are a few thoughts...

The Service Manual is on the KN2000 Page in the Members Area. That might help you with some diagnostics and will help you with taking the KN2000 apart or whatever you need to do to take out the floppy drive. It will tell you the model of the floppy drive and we probably have the service manual for the floppy drive too.

I understand that the floppy disks in Technics instruments are normal PC floppy drives, mounted by means of a controller board. By retaining the board you should be able to replace the actual drive unit with an inexpensive PC one.

Another alternative (which is what I would do if I was taking the drive out) is to replace it with a USB drive. These are also fairly inexpensive and will make your KN2000 more versatile.

There are quite a few posts in the forum about that. Go to the main forums page and use the Google Search there to look up "USB drive" or something like that. The search box there just searches my Technics keyboards websites.

Best wishes,
Mike
